Some historical notes. The Rolla weaving mill was founded on the ruins of the Visconti castle to exploit the water current of the river and generate - thanks to a turbine - hydroelectric energy to drive the looms.
In 1903, its founders, brothers Pietro and Giuseppe Rolla, sold the right to exploit the hydroelectric power to Benigno Crespi, who built the hydroelectric power station at the foot of the weaving mill and increased the exploitation of hydroelectric power using a tunnel built by the Rolla brothers themselves.
The Adda river, running from Trezzo to Lake Como, is rich in hydroelectric power stations that look like late romantic mansions, iron bridges that resemble the Eiffel Tower and navigable canals designed by Leonardo during his stay at Villa Melzi in Vaprio d'Adda. The backdrop of the 'Virgin of the Rocks' is said to be inspired by the landscape of the Adda near the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocchetta not far from Trezzo.
